The graduation approach has been shown to be one of the most effective economic inclusion interventions to help the world’s poorest people lift themselves out of poverty. It is a time-bound approach that combines training, mentoring and seed capital to help vulnerable households engage in business activities, connecting them to financial and other services, and strengthening their ability to earn higher incomes. Through this, families gain the confidence to start and sustain productive activities. Over time this enables them to build a path – or graduate – out of extreme poverty.
Program partners Jeevika, Bihar and Fundación Capital are poised to transform state and national social protection systems to reach unprecedented scale in India and Latin America, where many people – often rural women and children – live on the margins. The Partnership for Economic Inclusion, housed at the World Bank, brings together deep expertise and serves as a practical global resource for those wanting to expand social and economic inclusion programs of this type. These three partners and other key stakeholders will work together to help over one million people move out of extreme poverty over the next five years and strengthen a powerful global partnership to ensure that no one is left behind.
