From transforming school meals and strengthening domestic workers’ rights to advancing accessible healthcare, these stories show what is possible when locally led organisations have the support to build lasting, systems-level change.

Recognising leadership in transforming school meals

In Kenya, Food4Education was named a 2026 German Africa Prize laureate for its work connecting school meals with food security, local agriculture and employment.

By strengthening the systems around school meals, Food4Education is helping children access nutritious food while supporting local economies and creating employment opportunities.

Its founder, Wawira Njiru, was also recognised with a 2026 Diane von Furstenberg Award for her leadership and commitment to creating meaningful change for the next generation.

Strengthening protections for domestic workers

In Brazil, Themis – Gender, Justice and Human Rights, working with the National Federation of Domestic Workers (Fenatrad), has helped advance an important new resolution on domestic workers’ rights.

The resolution has been approved by Brazil’s National Council for Human Rights and establishes national guidelines to promote decent work, strengthen social protections, formalise employment relationships and improve access to justice for domestic workers across the country.

It marks a significant step towards recognising and protecting the rights of domestic workers, whose contributions are essential to families and communities across Brazil.

Making healthcare more accessible for people with disabilities

In Indonesia, the International Budget Partnership’s PRIMA programme has supported a new agreement between the Indonesian Association of Women with Disabilities (HWDI) and the Ministry of Health.

Informed by assessments of 48 health centres across eight provinces, the agreement aims to improve healthcare worker training, expand accessible information and strengthen the participation of people with disabilities in healthcare services.

By bringing the experiences and priorities of people with disabilities into public health systems, this work is helping make healthcare more inclusive and accessible for everyone.

From Kenya to Brazil and Indonesia, these stories reflect the power of locally led organisations to advance progress in their communities while strengthening the systems that shape people’s lives.
