Teaching at the Right Level – Africa
In recent years, millions of children across the world have been signed up to go to school. But too many of these children are not learning, leaving school without being able to read or do basic arithmetic.
The Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach is reorienting national and state education systems to help every child acquire basic skills in literacy and numeracy. Pioneered by one of India’s leading education NGOs, Pratham, and tested by Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) affiliated researchers through seven randomized impact evaluations in India and Africa, the TaRL approach has been shown to be among the most successful programs to improve children’s learning. J-PAL and Pratham are now working with African governments and civil society to adapt and scale up the effort across six countries on the continent. The TaRL Africa approach involves supporting policymakers and practitioners to set achievable goals, use teaching-learning practices that are at the level of the child rather than being dictated by a rigid age-grade curriculum, set up hands-on, on-site mentoring systems to support teachers to deliver effectively, and promote measurement strategies that lead to action.
With Co-Impact support, TaRL Africa expects to improve foundational learning outcomes for three million students with the potential to benefit millions more as the program expands.
